Dorset Beaches

Dorset is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the UK – here’s our 6 of the best.

Amazing Beaches of West Dorset

Hive Beach

Hive Beach is a shingle beach on the beautiful Jurassic Coast near Burton Bradstock. This popular Dorset beach is never overcrowded and is a great place to spend the day. The beach has probably one of the best beach cafes on the South Coast – the Hive Beach Cafe has received rave reviews including from the Sunday Times and has a year round excellent seafood menu as well as a great ice cream parlor

West Bay

West Bay is located just south of the town of Bridport and has a picturesque harbour and modern pier which affords stunning views along the Dorset Coastline towards Weymouth and Lyme Regis. There are a number of walks which are easily accessible and around the harbour are a number stalls offering some of the freshest fish and chips you will find. The West Bay beach was recently used in the highly popular TV series, Broadchurch.

Seatown is a small shingle beach just south of the village of Chideock and provides great view of Golden Cap, the highest point on Dorset’s coastline. Almost on the beach is the very popular Anchor Inn which serves great food and drink and is open all year round.

Charmouth offers a large beach and is part of the Jurassic Coast. It is most famous for its fossil hunting and is probably one of the best places to find fossils in Dorset and perhaps the UK. At the beach the Heritage Coast Centre fossil workshops and runs guided fossil hunting tours.

Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis offers a beautiful and safe sandy beach as well as great views of teh Dorset coast from the historic cobb. The beach has a promenade filled with cafes and restaurants so you can sit back and relax watching the world go by. The far end of the beach boasts the famous Cobb which has featured in several films such as ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’. Behind the beach are beautiful gardens and is home to the new Mark Hix fish restaurant. The high street is only yards away from the seafront and offers an interesting array of one off shops and cafes.

Weymouth offers a gently sloping sandy and safe family beach. It is a very popular beach with a multitude of attractions along the waterfront promenade, including a funfair, sand sculptures and a host of cafes and restaurants. There are also a number of traditional beach activities including donkey rides, pedalos, punch & judy and trampolines.

What Our Guests Say...

Just spent a long weekend here and must say thoroughly enjoyed it. Stayed in Carter's cottage, lovely and warm and cosy and spotlessly clean. Went with our daughter and one year old grandson. Perfect for families so much there to do - would love to go back in the summer months although weather was kind to us sunny but cold. Very well equipped all you could possibly want with good local pubs.

We stayed in 'Pigsty Cottage'. So beautiful, we had our own little veranda & stunning views overlooking the lakes & surrounding countryside. A short drive to Chesil Beach. The cottage is well equipped & comfortable. A jug of milk & a selection of tea & coffee was a lovely welcome!
