Visitor Attractions in West Dorset

Cerne Giant

The Cerne Giant stands 180ft tall and is Britain’s largest chalk hill figure. The origins of the Cerne Giant are somewhat mysterious with many theories surrounding its identity including whether its an ancient symbol of spirituality, the Greco-Roman hero Hercules, or even if its a mockery of Oliver Cromwell.

Hardy Monument

This distinctive tower sits on a ridge high above the Dorset coast. The tower was erected to commemorate Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy who was thes Flag-Captain on the HMS Victory. Around the tower are fantastic views and plent of excellent picnic spots.

Maiden Castle

Maiden Castle is one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Europe. The several ramparts which once protected several hundred residents provide an insight into its historic past. There is evidence of a late Iron Age cemetery, where many of the burials had suffered horrific injuries from defending the fort.

Portland Castle

Portland Castle, built in the early 1540s, is one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal forts used to protect against French and Spanish invasion. The castle provides amazing sea views and gives you a chance to see the powerful armoury that was used. As well as its older history the castle also played a part in the First and Second World Wars.

What Our Guests Say...

My family has stayed here many times including two visits this year. The cottages are very nice and have everything you need. They are user friendly and you don't feel continuous panic if you have young children there! The grounds and setting are completely stunning. My family and I lay in the garden outside our cottage and listened to the sound of the birds wings whirring through the air as they sped around the buildings. We are talking seriously peaceful!

Craig, London

Relaxing weekend - The accommodation was lovely, clean and tidy. Quiet and relaxing. I went away with my husband for a peaceful weekend break and that is exactly what we got. But on the other hand the place well equipped for children and so we will be back with our children next time. Plenty of things to do locally for children and couples.

Megan, Towcester

Loved our holiday. Lots to keep our little one entertained, tennis, games room, trampoline, rowing boats, fishing, playing in the meadow, the ducks and woodland walks. Cottage lovely clean and had everything we needed. We went to Burton Bradstock beach, monkey world, dinosaur & teddy bear museums in Dorchester, Lulworth Cove, Abbotsbury children's farm. Fantastic time and back for more hopefully next year.

John, Swanley

Just spent a long weekend here and must say thoroughly enjoyed it. Stayed in Carter's cottage, lovely and warm and cosy and spotlessly clean. Went with our daughter and one year old grandson. Perfect for families so much there to do - would love to go back in the summer months although weather was kind to us sunny but cold. Very well equipped all you could possibly want with good local pubs.

Susan, Surrey

By far the best place we have stayed. Lovely warm welcome, cottages delightful and scenery stunning!
