How We Created Our Cosy Holiday Cottages
There’s something truly special about staying in a holiday cottage that feels like a home away from home—somewhere warm, inviting, and full of character. When we set out to create our cosy holiday cottages, we knew we wanted them to be more than just a place to stay. We wanted them to tell a story, to have personality, and to offer our guests a truly unique experience. This meant paying close attention to every detail, upcycling furniture, and incorporating beautiful vintage pieces to bring charm and history back into the space.
Breathing New Life into Old Treasures
One of the most rewarding parts of creating our cottages was the process of upcycling and restoring furniture. Instead of buying all brand-new pieces, we scoured antique shops to find key furniture pieces with history and character. Many of these pieces had seen better days, but with a little love, sanding, and fresh paint or varnish, they were transformed into beautiful focal points for our cottages. A firm favourite of Lady Rudge for all vintage shopping is the Dorchester Curiosity Centre. https://www.dorchestercuriositycentre.co.uk
A particular favourite is an old oak farmhouse table that we rescued from a second-hand shop. With a bit of careful restoration, it now serves as a stunning dining table where families can gather, share meals, and create memories. Similarly, vintage wooden chairs were given a new lease on life with reupholstered seats and a fresh coat of chalk paint, adding warmth and personality to the space.
The Beauty of Reclaimed and Vintage Finds
We wanted each cottage to have its own unique charm, and incorporating vintage and reclaimed pieces played a huge role in achieving that. From old wooden dressers repurposed to vintage suitcases stacked as coffee tables, every piece has a story to tell.
Reclaimed wood was also used throughout the cottages, from shelving units to welly boot racks. Not only does this bring a cosy, lived-in feel, but it also helps us to be more sustainable, reducing waste and giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded.
Attention to Detail: The Little Touches That Matter
Creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere is all about the details. We’ve carefully chosen soft, natural fabrics for curtains and cushions, ensuring everything feels warm and welcoming. Hand-knitted throws, vintage fabrics, and handmade pottery all contribute to the homely feel of each space.
Lighting was another key element—we opted for warm, ambient lighting using vintage-style lamps and amber bulbs to create a soft, welcoming glow. Each cottage also features unique artwork, much of it sourced from local artists or antique markets, further adding to the sense of place and character.
A Timeless and Homely Retreat
Our goal was to create cottages that feel like a step back in time while offering modern comforts. We wanted guests to feel instantly at home, whether they’re curling up with a book, enjoying a slow breakfast at the farmhouse table, or unwinding with a spot of fishing on the lakes.
By blending upcycled furniture, vintage finds, and careful attention to detail, we’ve created spaces that are not only comfortable but also full of warmth and personality. The result? Cosy retreats where guests can relax, recharge, and experience the charm of country living in a truly unique setting.
We love seeing guests fall in love with the character of our cottages, and we hope that each stay feels as special as the story behind every carefully chosen piece inside. If you’re looking for a holiday experience that feels like home, we’d love to welcome you to our little haven of charm and comfort. https://www.rudgefarmcottages.co.uk/rudge-farm-cottages/
