Restoring Our Lake: Winter 2024 Clean-Up
Each winter brings its own set of essential jobs at Rudge Farm, and this season was no exception. During our down season, we undertook the significant task of cleaning out the lake, ensuring it remains a thriving habitat for our fish, ducks, and surrounding wildlife.
The Challenge: Silt and Sediment Build-Up
Over time, silt and debris accumulate at the bottom of the lake, reducing water quality and making it less hospitable for aquatic life. To maintain a healthy ecosystem, we had to remove this build-up, a job that required careful planning and teamwork.
Creating a Temporary Dam
The first step was to create a division within the lake using sandbags, effectively forming a temporary dam. This allowed us to work on one side of the lake while keeping the other side safe for the fish and waterfowl.
Relocating the Fish
With the temporary dam in place, we carefully captured all the fish and moved them to the unaffected side of the lake. This process required patience and precision to ensure the safety of every fish, allowing them to continue thriving while we worked on their habitat.
Clearing the Lake Bed
Mr. Rudge, armed with his trusty digger, got to work removing the silt and debris that had accumulated at the bottom of the lake. This was a vital step in restoring water clarity and maintaining a balanced environment for our fish and ducks.
Opening Up the Lakes
In addition to the clean-up, we have now opened up the access point between the two lakes, making it much larger. Guests can now boat between the two lakes with ease, as they have been completely joined up into one big, expansive lake. This transformation has already made a noticeable impact, with wildlife thriving in the new, larger habitat.
The Benefits of Our Work
The effort put into this clean-up ensures that our lake remains in top condition, providing a rich and nourishing habitat for wildlife. With improved water quality and a fresh environment, we look forward to seeing nature flourish once again. This process is something we repeat every couple of years to guarantee the health and vitality of the lake, allowing future generations of fish, ducks, and other wildlife to thrive.
As spring approaches, we are excited to see the results of our hard work, with a cleaner, healthier lake welcoming back its inhabitants in perfect condition. It’s a demanding job, but one that plays a crucial role in maintaining the natural beauty of Rudge Farm. https://www.rudgefarmcottages.co.uk/facilities-at-rudge-farm-cottages/the-lakes/
