Capturing Wildlife Photography at Rudge Farm

Capturing Wildlife Photography at Rudge Farm

Wildlife photography at Rudge Farm offers an incredible experience. The rolling countryside provides the perfect setting for stunning images.

Lady Rudge, an avid photographer, has always loved capturing nature through her lens. Since moving to the farm, she has discovered a deep passion for wildlife photography. She watches the kingfisher daily during spring and summer, but despite her best efforts, she hasn’t yet managed to capture it on camera. It’s just a matter of time before she lands that perfect shot.

Best Time for Wildlife Photography

Early mornings and late evenings offer the best light. Animals become more active during these times.

Spring and summer bring swifts and swallows. Autumn and winter reveal deer and birds of prey soaring above the fields.

Birds of Prey at Rudge Farm

Buzzards often circle high, searching for prey. Their broad wings make them easy to spot. The buzzard and red kite visit Rudge Farm regularly and almost reside there. They spend most of their day sitting in the weeping willow tree by the lake or resting in the lower meadow on the grass beside the lake.

Red kites glide effortlessly, using their forked tails to steer. These beautiful birds now appear frequently in Dorset.

Kingfishers flash past the water, their bright blue feathers catching the light. Photographers need patience to capture their speed. At around 7am and 5pm, those who wait on the middle island between the lakes might see the kingfisher dive down and land on top of the duck house. Lady Rudge knows the moment is coming when she will finally capture this elusive bird in all its glory.

Otters and Water life

Otters play along the streams and often appear at dawn. Their playful nature makes them a delight to photograph. At around 5am, those who wait on Orchard Cottage’s veranda might see the female otter and her pups swimming gracefully throughout the lake.

Toads and frogs thrive in the ponds. After rain, their croaking fills the air, creating a magical atmosphere.

Deer in the Fields and Woodlands

Fallow deer move gracefully across the fields. They often blend into the trees, requiring a keen eye to spot them.

Roe deer are super easy to spot because of their fluffy buff patch around their bottom and rump. It almost looks like a little bunny hopping around, and it’s absolutely hilarious to see. The patch even forms a sort of heart shape! From the cottage windows, we very regularly spot deer walking down the main road pathway on the estate, just by the games barn. It is a truly magical sight to witness.

Essential Tips for Photographing Wildlife

1. Move slowly and stay quiet. Sudden movements scare animals away.

2. Use a zoom lens to capture details without disturbing the wildlife.

3. Be patient. Waiting often leads to the best shots.

4. Wear natural colours. Bright clothing makes animals aware of your presence.

5. Check the weather. Overcast days soften harsh shadows, creating better images.

Final Thoughts

Rudge Farm provides a paradise for wildlife lovers. Careful planning and patience help photographers capture beautiful images. Lady Rudge continues to refine her skills, always searching for that breathtaking moment. Last September, we hosted our very first photography retreat, which welcomed both amateur and experienced photographers. We hope to soon host a dedicated wildlife photography retreat, as this has become a new passion of ours. Enjoy the experience, and respect the animals in their natural home.
