Rescuing 14 Chickens: A New Free-Range Life at Rudge Farm Cottages
When we first heard about the opportunity to rescue chickens from *Chicken Rescue UK*, we knew we couldn’t pass it up. Battery and commercial farm chickens often live harsh, confined lives, but thanks to the efforts of organizations like *Chicken Rescue UK*, these birds get a second chance at life.
So, one very early morning, we set off to collect our new feathered friends. The moment we arrived, we were met with 14 hens who had spent most of their lives in cages. Their feathers were patchy, their movements hesitant, and their eyes wary. But there was also something else—a quiet resilience that promised they were ready for a new beginning.
Settling into Their New Home
Bringing them to Rudge Farm was an experience we’ll never forget. As soon as we opened the transport crates, the hens hesitated at first, unsure of the soft grass beneath their feet. It was likely the first time they had ever seen open fields, fresh air, or felt the sun on their backs. But within moments, curiosity took over. Some tentatively pecked at the ground, while others flapped their wings in a newfound sense of freedom.
Over the next few weeks, their transformation was astonishing. Their feathers began to grow back, their pale combs turned a healthier shade of red, and their timid personalities blossomed into confident, inquisitive birds. They quickly learned where to roost, where to find food, and, most importantly, where to dust bathe—a simple joy they had been deprived of for so long.
A New Lease on Life
Now, these chickens live a completely free-range life at Rudge Farm Cottages, scratching in the dirt, foraging for insects, and exploring their beautiful surroundings. Guests staying at the cottages often enjoy watching their antics, and the hens have even developed their own little personalities—some love human company, while others prefer the company of their flock.
We never expected how rewarding this rescue mission would be. Not only have these hens been given a second chance, but they have also brought so much joy to our farm and our visitors. If you’ve ever considered rescuing ex-battery hens, we wholeheartedly encourage it. There’s nothing quite like watching an animal experience freedom for the first time, and the gratitude they show is immeasurable.
Additionally, we are delighted to share that we now have delicious farm-fresh eggs for sale in our farm shop, thanks to our happy and healthy hens. The chickens have also made great friends with our hatchling ducklings, forming an adorable and unexpected bond. Their interactions are a delight to watch, as they explore their surroundings together, proving that friendship knows no species boundaries.
